Animus against informers - United Press Association...

Ashburton, April 16, 1904. Two more of the alleged sly-grog selling cases were heard yesterday and decisions reserved. The remaining four cases will be heard on Thursday.

After the adjournment of the Court a large crowd waited for two hours outside the Courthouse for the informers to come out, but the police got them out the back way and drove them to Chertsey, 12 miles distant, to board the express for Christchurch. This becoming known from 40 to 50 men boarded the train from Ashburton for Chertsey intending to catch the informers there. The police outwitted the crowd and got the informers-Hall, Withey and Henderson into the guard's van, which the mob surrounded, hooting and groaning. One window was smashed. Prosecutions are expected to follow.
